Advanced Maternal Health Certification

International HELP continued the collaboration with Canton San Miguel to train and further equip the Community Health Workers (CHWs) in advanced maternal health. By conducting a foundational research analysis on the current status of maternal health in El Salvador, IHELP found that many Salvadoran women lack access to reproductive health, sexual health, family planning, and pre/post-natal care services. This lack of access disproportionately affects women in rural areas who live in communities with extremely limited resources. Members in this training included 5 previously trained Community Health Workers and 13 Red Cross workers.

Training Topics

  • Prenatal Care
  • Pregnancy Care
  • Labor & Delivery
  • Neonatal Care
  • Postnatal Care
  • What To Do In An Emergency

I have had the opportunity to be with a person, a young mother who was about to give birth, and I did not have the training or knowledge [to help her.] And now, with this training, although I may not know everything, I have a much better understanding than before so if a mother ever calls me for help. For me, this [training] has been a huge help; thank you to everyone who has been able to offer this material to us because it will be a huge help to us in these cases even if they don’t happen all of the time. Truthfully, we are far from the hospital.

Advanced Nutrition Certification

Through research, community surveys, and key informant interviews, IHELP learned that many Salvadorans lack the knowledge on how to prevent and care for nutrition-related illnesses, especially diabetes. As sugary drinks and processed foods enter the CHWs’ communities, more people are at risk. This training provided Advanced Nutrition Certifications to 9 previously trained Community Health Workers (CHWs) and 2 new CHWs in Canton San Miguel, El Salvador, to help combat nutrition-related disease and give community members the skills necessary to make healthy habit changes.

Training Topics

  • Nutrition & Health Behaviors
  • Diabetes Management
  • Using a Glucometer
  • Nutrition-Related Illnesses
  • Nutrient Deficiencies
  • Changing Health Behaviors

I am very grateful because since the start of this project, almost six years ago, I have put into practice taking blood pressure for community members and this has been beneficial and of much help to our community. I was able to help my father when his blood pressure was very high. I began speaking to him telling him to stay calm, not to worry. I asked myself what am I supposed to do? I am not a doctor, but I am a health worker and I should be able to help. This is why community health workers are here. To help assist and help them in whichever condition they may find themselves.
