Meet Charlene, Video Animation/University Liaison Volunteer

May 3, 2018

Hello! My name is Charlene Persons. I am a volunteer here at International Help. I like to consider myself a renaissance woman with many varying interests. I enjoy martial arts, illustration, writing, history, and language acquisition.

I started studying at Liberty University with the intent of becoming a doctor or Physician’s Assistant, but I quickly realized my passion was leaning more toward health education and nutrition. I was especially interested in the historical evolution of public health and nutrition. Deciding I loved the historical aspect of the health field as well, I changed to an interdisciplinary degree that combined my love of history with my passion for health.

While I was finishing my senior year of classes, I stumbled across International Help during a fortunate foray into the wilds of Facebook. International Help’s mission and people immediately impressed me. Monterey is a passionate, warm person, and that fire is the heart of International Help. It’s a heady feeling, working with people with the same passion as you are, never being bored in the deluge of new ideas and learning new things. I am enjoying my time with International Help immensely.

As for me personally, I enjoy cooking with my husband, am learning Spanish and Japanese, and am a big Lord of the Rings fan. I even went so far as to learn elvish when I was in 5th grade, and can still even recite some elvish poetry, if pressed. I love traveling, reading books, and eating food. I am the oldest of three girls, and am a proud navy brat.
